Mix the baking soda with water. Add it with the reset of the seasoning into the beef and mix it well. Marinade for at least 30 mins
Pat dry the tofu. Pan fry it in a pan with medium high heat until both side are golden (about 2-3 mins each side). Dish it up and put it aside
Add 2 tsp of oil in the pan. Heat it with high heat. When the pan and hot is oil. Add in the beef and pan-fry until both side is golden. When it is about medium done, dish it up and put it aside.
Heat the pan with medium high heat. Add in 1 tsp of oil. Add in the onion, green onion, and garlic. Stir fry them until fragrant.
Once the onion is soft, add in the tofu and sauce mixture and mix it well. Turn the heat to medium low and simmer for 1-2 mins
Add in the beef. Stir and add enough starch mixture until the sauce is thickened. Dish it up and serve it hot.

Other tips1- The marinaded beef can be cooked like skewers without any sauce mixture.2- You can use other spices to replace Chinese 5 species.3- if you like_ cumin, you can sprinkle additional of 1/2 tsp of cumin4- You can use any other chili oil as per your perference
